Wanting to expand another character, Edith Ann, the bratty child in the big chair, Tomlin found the Peabody-winning after school special writer Jane Wagner. They clicked. They've been life partners and collaborators for forty-two years and now they're getting married. Wagner wrote and directed Tomlin projects ranging from Grammy-winning comedy albums and Emmy-winning tv specials to hit movies (The Incredible Shrinking Woman) to super flops (Moment by Moment, co-starring John Travolta) to Tony-winning Broadway megahits (The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe). Posted at 08:43 AM in Birthdays, Books, Crime Permalink Comments (0) TrackBack (0) August 30, 2013 Colm Tóibín on Wilde's Dualities in New Edition of De Profundis ProfundisAccording to his sons, Oscar Wilde especially liked Robert Louis Stevenson's work and Colm Tóibín discusses the Jekyll and Hyde dualities in so much of Wilde's life: gay and married, an Irishman in London, rich and chased by creditors, an aristocrat and Irish patriot, "a wit who was also serious, but a limp and timid lyricist who wrote brave and modern plays." In the spring of 1895, he was also the accuser and accused in two infamous trials that took him from the most celebrated man in London to a jailed, unspeakable scoundrel. For the first and most horrible part of his sentence he was prohibited from having pen and paper. Toward the end of his two year confinement, he wrote his famous long, long love letter to Lord Alfred Douglas, now collected in De Profundis and Other Prison Writings [Kindle], introduced by Tóibín in a new edition from Penguin. StevensonIf you've made it to adulthood without revisiting Stevenson, stop everything and read Kidnapped [Kindle]. Rupert Smith says, "First and foremost, it's one of the most exciting adventure novels I can think of, a model of brilliant plotting, compelling narrative and sharp, magnetic characterisation. The story of David Balfour, the young ingenu sold into slavery and cheated of his inheritance by wicked Uncle Ebenezer, is probably the best coming-of-age narrative I can think of – it never labours its points, but it shows David learning from each experience and acquaintance until he's man enough to claim what's rightfully his. But there's another level to Kidnapped, one which only struck me when I re-read it in my 40s – it's a profoundly homosexual novel. I can see readers rolling their eyes at this point, but bear with me. Whether Stevenson realised it or not, the kidnapping of the young man and his experiences at the hands of older, more powerful men is fraught with erotic energy, and his friendship with the charismatic Alan Breck is highly romantic. Some critics point to The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as 'proof' of Stevenson's homosexual leanings, and I can see their point – but for me, Kidnapped is the dead giveaway (and the better novel). In fact, this was the book that inspired me to write the first of my James Lear novels, The Low Road [Kindle], which is a sexed-up version of the same basic story." Based on a real event, the novel follows two seventeen year-olds, Craig and Harry, as they attempt to break the record for world's longest kiss. If you're not a teen and guess the book has nothing for you, think again: It's narrated by a Greek chorus of "gay uncles" from the generation lost to aids. A starred PW review called it "a landmark achievement," and Entertainment Weekly gave it an A-. Some of David's best works are collaborations, most notably with John Green for Will Grayson, Will Grayson about two boys one gay, one straight, who have the same name; and with Rachel Cohn for Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, which became an okayish Michael Cera movie that was not entirely degayed. Ever inventive, his most recent novel was Every Day, a NYT bestseller about a boy who each morning wakes up as a different person but always in love with the same girl. So far his only adult book is the gay novella The Lover's Dictionarythat both charmed and suffered from being written as dictionary entries. Posted at 10:36 AM in Books, YA Permalink Comments (1) TrackBack (0) Born August 29: Edward Carpenter Carp Ardent socialist (author of the anthem England Arise, founding member of the Independent Labour Party), feminist (saying, "there is no solution except the freedom of woman," he considered traditional marriage to be a form of prostitution), gay activist (his ground-breaking books like My Days and Dreams and The Intermediate Sex go far beyond earlier essays by his friend John Addington Symonds), pacifist, nudist, mystic, poet, and the first person to introduce sandals to modern Britain, Edward Carpenter's greatest legacy may be how he lived his life. Utterly changed after reading Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass in 1863, he began to dream of a brotherhood of manly love that would erase class lines and give rise to a true democracy. After graduating from Cambridge and leaving a position vacated by Leslie Stephen, Virginia Woolf's father, Carpenter gave public lectures in Leeds intended for the working class (but attended only by the middle class, who didn't warm to his ideas) and sought to befriend laborers, unsuccessfully. Finally in 1891, after meeting by chance on a train, he and uneducated George Merrill became lovers. In 1898, when Carpenter was fifty-four and Merrill was thirty-two, they established a house together, absolutely unheard of in an England still widely antigay in the aftermath of the Oscar Wilde trials. They lived together openly as a couple for thirty years until Merrill's death, and their cross-class love was the direct inspiration for their friend E.M. Forster's novel Maurice, as well as D.H. Lawrence's heterosexualized version, Lady Chatterley's Lover. Not all authors were so enamored. In the decade after Carpenter's death, George Orwell ridiculed "every fruit-juice drinker, nudist, sandal wearer [and] sex maniac" among the Socialists. Yet an American Communist, Harry Hay, credited Carpenter's writings for galvanizing him to start the first gay rights group, The Mattachine Society, in Los Angeles in 1950. The must-read, Lammy-winning biography Edward Carpenter: A Life of Liberty and Love by Sheila Rowbotham was Peter Tatchell's and Jeanette Winterson's favorite book of 2008 and Sarah Schulman's favorite lgbt book of 2009. George Cukor cast skinny Nancy Kulp as, what else, the comic spinster -- at 30! -- and variations on that theme were the mainstay of her career for the next thirty-eight years. Although she wrung every drop of humor from the wet cliche of the sexless, manless old maid, midcentury critics could be cruel in their critiques of Kulp, describing her as TV's most homely girl with the "face of a shriveled balloon, the figure of a string of spaghetti, and the voice of a bullfrog in mating season." Undaunted, she played her thin parts with brio, building from bit roles in Shane, Sabrina, and A Star Is Born, to her biggest success on television. After three seasons on his Bob Cummings Show, writer-producer Paul Henning cast Kulp in his next project, The Beverly Hillbillies. Surely her Miss Jane Hathaway is one of the immortal early queer characters, and while audiences were invited to laugh at her highly unlikely pining for hot Jethro (when he wasn't in drag as his sister Jethrine), Kulp gave her character all the dignity befitting the scholarly, single secretary who was happiest with her women-only birdwatching society. Finally, critics appreciated her and she was rewarded with an Emmy nomination in 1967 and, following the series' end in 1971, roles on The

Wie ein europäischer Islam aussehen könnte und wie der derzeitige Stand der Muslime beim Thema ist, darüber diskutierten rund 130 Experten aus verschiedenen Ländern in der Akademie der Diözese Rottenburg-Stuttgart. Ein Rückblick.

Wie könnte ein europäischer Islam aussehen? Könnte er bosnisch, türkisch, vielleicht deutsch oder doch anders geprägt sein? Darüber diskutierten über 130Experten aus über 10 Ländern vom 15.-16. November in der Akademie der Diözese Rottenburg-Stuttgart. Auch Vertreter der muslimischen Religionsgemeinschaften gingen während der Tagung der Frage nach, welche Rahmenbedingungen eine konstruktive Diskussion über einen europäischen Islam begünstigen bzw. verhindern können.
Eine konstruktive Diskussion über einen europäischen Islam wird aus der Sicht der Tagungsteilnehmer vor allem dadurch verhindert, dass der Islam in Europa vorherrschend als Sicherheitsproblem angesehen wird. Beklagt wurde auch eine verbreitete Fremdbestimmung des Islams im politischen und öffentlichen Diskurs. Islamdiskurse fungierten vielfach als Ersatzdiskurse für die noch nicht akzeptierte und verarbeitete Pluralisierung der Gesellschaften in Europa.

Der Dialog-Beauftragte der Akadamie der Diözese, Hans-Jörg Schmid, machte bereits im Vorfeld zur Veranstaltung deutlich, dass es nicht darum gehe, den Muslimen vorzugeben, wie sie ihre Religion begreifen oder auslegen sollen. Gerade inhaltliche Propaganda für eine bestimmte Lesart des Islam sollte laut Schmid nicht stattfinden. Der Akademie gehe es darum, den muslimischen Religionsgemeinschaften eine Plattform zu bieten, um die Inhalte und Möglichkeiten eines europäischen Islam zu diskutieren. Gerade das Verständnis des vorbelasteten Begriffs „Euro-Islam", der quasi einen areligiösen Kultur-Islam darstellt, wurde von den meisten Teilnehmern als Grundlage für die Muslime in Europa weitestgehend abgelehnt.
Muslime brauchen Selbstkritik
Die Verortung der Muslime in Europa muss aus der Sicht der Teilnehmer auch auf theologischer Ebene erfolgen. Nach einigen Fachleuten fehlt es hier an einer grundlegenden Selbstkritik bei den Muslimen. Es würden zwar Debatten über die eigene Verortung geführt, aber diese bewegten sich oft in einem zu engen Raum. Gerade viele Muslime fänden in den bestehenden Organisationsstrukturen der Religionsgemeinschaften keinen Platz, so die Sicht einiger Teilnehmer.
Europa als Normengemeinschaft
Das Spezifische an Europa sei die gemeinsame Verarbeitung von Erfahrungen der Spaltung, erklärte Heinz-Jürgen Axt, Vize-Präsident der Südosteuropagesellschaft. Er sieht Europa als eine „Normengemeinschaft", die als Fundament Werte wie Freiheit, Toleranz und Solidarität hat. Muslime könnten aber hier gleichermaßen Zugang finden und seien ein Teil Europas, so Axt.
Bekim Agai, Direktor des Instituts für Studien der Kultur und Religion des Islams (Universität Frankfurt), erklärte, dass sich Muslime verstärkt als Fremdkörper in Europa sehen. Dies liege daran, dass die Identität Europas oft nach außen hin als „nicht-islamisch" präsentiert werde. Agai machte darauf aufmerksam, dass Erwartungen und Versuche von verschiedenen europäischen Ländern in Bezug auf einen Euro-Islam falsch seien, wenn man sich nur die Pluralität innerhalb des Islam ansehe. Bestimmte Sorgen und Probleme Europas liegen laut Agai auch an der Tatsache, dass die Politik keine Antworten und Lösungen präsentieren kann. Der Islam in Europa sei auf dem Weg der Institutionalisierung. Was dies aber am Ende genau bedeute für den Islam in Europa, könne noch nicht mit absoluter Sicherheit gesagt werden.
Raum für Debatten
Kerem Öktem von der Universität Oxford kritisierte entsprechend, dass vielfach von „europäisch" gesprochen werde, wenn „deutsch" oder „französisch" gemeint sei. Er sieht die Notwendigkeit für eine gerechtere und nicht-stigmatisierende Atmosphäre für Debatten zum Thema Islam. In letzter Zeit gebe es zwar solche Bestrebungen, allerdings werde in den Gesellschaften und in den Medien der Islam immer noch als Gefahr oder gewalttätige Religion wahrgenommen und diskutiert.
Vielleicht ändere sich deshalb nicht das Bild des Islam in den Köpfen der Menschen. Auch Öktem machte darauf aufmerksam, dass die Debatten die derzeit über den „europäischen" oder Euro-Islam geführt werden, nicht mit Festsetzungen dazu führen können, dass dieser wirklich europäisch wird. Die Diskussionen in dieser Richtung bewertet Öktem als von der „Realität entfernt" und als eine Grenzüberschreitung, da die Diskussionen auch von außen gelenkt würden, um Inhalte zu bestimmen und Diktionen vorzunehmen.
Nur als selbstbestimmtes Projekt
Jorgen Nielsen von der Universität Kopenhagen stellte dar, dass mit dem Islam die Frage des Verhältnisses von Religion, Ethnizität und Kultur in Ost- und Westeuropa neu aufgebrochen sei. Ein europäischer Islam könne nur ein selbstbestimmtes Projekt der Muslime sein und der Islam sei längst, obwohl es anderslautende Debatten gebe, ein Teil Europas.
Levent Tezcan von der Universität Tilburg zeigte auf, dass dem Begriff „Euro-Islam" vielfach eine quasi heilsgeschichtliche Bedeutung zugeschrieben werde. Eine Europäisierung etwa der Organisationsstrukturen habe jedoch schon weitgehend stattgefunden.
Die Erlanger Professorin Riem Spielhaus betonte, dass Organisationen und Interessenvertretungen auf europäischer Ebene noch weitgehend ein Projekt für die Zukunft seien.
Beispiele aus Balkan und Türkei
Aus dem Kosovo, aus Kroatien und Bosnien-Herzegowina stellten Wissenschaftler Länderanalysen und moderne Islaminterpretationen vor, die für den europäischen Kontext insgesamt von Bedeutung sein können. Vielfach wurden gegenläufige Entwicklungen im Islam wie Nationalisierung und Globalisierung diagnostiziert, die einander überlagern. Weitere Beiträge widmeten sich transnationalen muslimischen Netzwerken und der türkischen „Diasporapolitik", die den Islam in Europa entscheidend mitprägen.
Im Rahmen der Tagung wurden auch gebräuchliche Kategorien wie „Migranten" oder „Herkunftsländer" kritisch hinterfragt. Sie träfen vielfach nicht mehr auf die multiplen Identitäten von Muslimen in der dritten oder vierten Generation zu. Mehrere Beiträge wiesen darauf hin, dass Muslime durch Islamdebatten erst zu Muslimen gemacht würden und es dadurch zu einem „religious turn" käme.
In der Abschlussdiskussion meldeten sich auch Vertreter von Religionsgemeinschaften zu Wort. Es wurde darauf hingewiesen, dass die Diskussion um den europäischen Islam einen elitären Charakter habe und mit der Lebenswirklichkeit der Muslime wenig zu tun habe. Im Übrigen sei der politische Steuerungswille eine erhebliche Bremse für kulturelle Ausformungen des Islams in Europa. Auch seien erhebliche Adaptionsprozesse seitens der islamischen Religionsgemeinschaften im Gange, die so nicht gewürdigt würden. „Der Prozess der Verortung wird vor allem über den Weg einer stärkeren Partizipation erreichbar sein, doch die Politik behindert diesen Prozess, soweit sie ihre Neutralität negierend eingreifend reguliert und damit versucht, einen durch die muslimische Gemeinschaft selbstzubestimmenden Prozeß fremdzubestimmen", so der stellvertretende Vorsitzende der Islamischen Gemeinschaft Milli Görüs (IGMG), Mustafa Yeneroglu, auf dem Podium. „Auch die Annahme, dass Identitätsfragen eindeutig geklärt werden müssen, damit Muslime hiesige Normen und Regeln einhalten, ist ein Produkt überholter nationalstaatlicher Vorstellungen", sagte Yeneroglu, denn sie zeugten nicht von Freiheitlichkeit, sondern einem dem zuwiderlaufenden Homogenisierungszwang.
Weiterführung geplant
Die Tagung wurde von der Akademie der Diözese Rottenburg-Stuttgart gemeinsam mit dem European Studies Centre der Universität Oxford, dem Institut für Studien der Kultur und Religion des Islams der Universität Frankfurt und der Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft veranstaltet und von der Robert Bosch Stiftung gefördert. Mit dieser Tagung führte die Akademie erstmals den Strang ihrer Tagungen zum bosnischen Islam mit dem türkei- und deutschlandbezogener Veranstaltungen zusammen. Die Tagung soll laut den Veranstaltern als interdisziplinäre und länderübergreifende Plattform zur Diskussion über den Islam in Europa weitergeführt werden.

[1 Aktualisierung] abu adam - Social Mention: @=Tipudaya Iblis dan Setan=@ Posted by abu utsman بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم Oleh: Ustadz Abu Adib Ibnul Qoyyim Al-Jauziyyah –rahimahullah- berkata dalam risalah beliau yang berjudul "Ighatsatul Lahfaan", bahwasanya Allah mengkhabarkan tentang musuh-Nya (yaitu) Iblis -la'natullah-, ketika Allah menanyainya tentang enggannya Iblis untuk sujud kepada Adam -'alaihissalaam- dengan alasan bahwa Iblis merasa lebih baik dan mulia dari pada Adam -'alaihissalaam-. Yang kemudian Allah mengeluarkannya dari surga. Maka Iblis berkata : "Ya Allah, beri tangguhlah saya sampai hari kiamat", maka Allah mengabulkannya. Berkatalah musuh Allah dalam surat Al-A'raf ayat 16-17, yang artinya : "Karena Engkau telah menghukumi kami sesat, maka sungguh aku akan mengalangi manusia dari jalan-Mu yang lurus. Kemudian akan aku datangi dari arah depan mereka dan dari belakang mereka, dari kanan dan dari kiri mereka. Dan Engkau tidak akan mendapati kebanyakan dari mereka bersyukur (taat)". Didalam ayat tersebut sangatlah jelas memberikan pengertian kepada kita, betapa semangatnya Iblis untuk menghalangi manusia dari jalan Allah yang lurus. Empat cara akan ditempuh Iblis untuk menghalangi manusia dari shirathal mustaqim. Terjadi silang pendapat di kalangan para 'Ulama tentang arti shiraathal mustaqim. 'Abdullah Ibnu 'Abbas menyatakan bahwa shirathal mustaqim adalah dienul haq (agama yang benar). Sedangkan 'Abdullah Ibnu Mas'ud menyatakan bahwa shirathal mustaqim adalah kitabullah (Al-Qur'an). Jabir bin 'Abdullah menyatakan bahwa artinya adalah Al-Islam. Dan Mujahid d menyatakan artinya adalah Al-Haq. Ibnul Qayyim lebih jauh berkata bahwa dari pendapat-pendapat para shahabat di atas tentang makna shirathal mustaqim adalah hampir sama. Yaitu, jalan yang mengantarkan kepada Allah Ta'ala. Itulah makna shirathal mustaqim. Jalan inilah yang ingin diputus oleh Iblis la'natullah, yang dalam surat Al-A'raf Iblis berkata akan menempuh 4 cara untuk memutusnya. Langkah pertama, Iblis akan mendatangi dari arah depan. Berkata Hasan Al-Bashri ; "Maksudnya adalah dari sisi akheratnya". Yakni, Iblis akan mengilhamkan kepada bani Adam agar bani Adam ragu dengan hari kebangkitan, ragu dengan surga, ragu dengan neraka, dan ragu dengan perkara-perkara akherat lainnya. Dan sulit kita gambarkan kerusakan yang akan terjadi kalau sampai misi ini berhasil. Langkah kedua, Iblis akan mendatangi bani Adam dari arah belakang mereka. Berkata 'Abdullah Ibnu 'Abbas : "Maksudnya adalah aku akan jadikan bani Adam itu agar sangat mencintai dengan dunia mereka". Langkah ini hampir sama dengan langkah yang pertama. Kejelekan yang akan terjadi kalau bani Adam sudah ragu dengan akheratnya tentu mereka akan meninggalkan urusan akheratnya. Begitu pula kalau bani Adam sangat cinta dengan dunia, maka mereka pun meninggalkan urusan akheratnya. Langkah ketiga, Iblis akan mendatangi Bani Adam dari arah kanan mereka. Berkata 'Abdullah ibnu Mas'ud bahwa maksudnya adalah Iblis akan samarkan urusan agama mereka. Maksudnya, Iblis akan menjadikan agar bani Adam ragu terhadap kebenaran, ragu terhadap Al-Qur'an, ragu terhadap kerasulan Muhammad -shalallahu 'alaihi wassalam-, dan lain-lain. Lebih jauh lagi, Ibnu 'Abbas d mengatakan bahwa Iblis akan mendatangi dari arah kanan maksudnya adalah dari kebaikan-kebaikannya. Iblis akan membuat ragu dari amal kebaikan-kebaikannya. Dan langkah yang keempat, Iblis akan datangi bani Adam dari kiri mereka. Berkata Al-Hasan Al-Bashri : "maksudnya adalah Iblis akan datang dari sisi kejelekan-kejelekannya". Iblis akan memerintahkan manusia untuk melakukan kejelekan, dan Iblis akan menghias-hiasi kejelekan-kejelekan ini agar nampak indah di mata manusia. Sehingga manusia mencintai kejelekan yang mereka lakukan, bahkan mereka bangga dengan kejelekan tersebut. Para pembaca yang mulia, jika kita perhatikan dengan seksama dari 4 langkah iblis di atas, maka akan nampak sekali bahwa Iblis akan mudah sekali memperdaya manusia, jika tidak berhati-hati dan berbekal ilmu (agama) yang shahih (benar). Di jelaskan oleh 'Abdullah ibnu 'Abbas kenapa syaithan tidak menyatakan "Aku akan datangi bani Adam dari atas mereka". Karena, syaithan mengetahui bahwa Allah ada di atas mereka. Hal ini menunjukkan pengertian bahwa ketika Allah ingin menurunkan Rahmat-Nya kepada hamba-hamba-Nya, maka tidak ada satu makhluk pun yang mampu untuk menghalangi Rahmat tersebut. Oleh karena itu, hendaknya setiap manusia untuk selalu meminta Rahmat kepada Allah Ta'ala. Demikianlah pembaca yang budiman, semoga risalah ini bermanfaat. PUTIN Published: September 11, 2013 NYTimes MOSCOW — RECENT events surrounding Syria have prompted me to speak directly to the American people and their political leaders. It is important to do so at a time of insufficient communication between our societies. Relations between us have passed through different stages. We stood against each other during the cold war. But we were also allies once, and defeated the Nazis together. The universal international organization — the United Nations — was then established to prevent such devastation from ever happening again. The United Nations' founders understood that decisions affecting war and peace should happen only by consensus, and with America's consent the veto by Security Council permanent members was enshrined in the United Nations Charter. The profound wisdom of this has underpinned the stability of international relations for decades. No one wants the United Nations to suffer the fate of the League of Nations, which collapsed because it lacked real leverage. This is possible if influential countries bypass the United Nations and take military action without Security Council authorization. The potential strike by the United States against Syria, despite strong opposition from many countries and major political and religious leaders, including the pope, will result in more innocent victims and escalation, potentially spreading the conflict far beyond Syria's borders. A strike would increase violence and unleash a new wave of terrorism. It could undermine multilateral efforts to resolve the Iranian nuclear problem and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and further destabilize the Middle East and North Africa. It could throw the entire system of international law and order out of balance. Syria is not witnessing a battle for democracy, but an armed conflict between government and opposition in a multireligious country. There are few champions of democracy in Syria. But there are more than enough Qaeda fighters and extremists of all stripes battling the government. The United States State Department has designated Al Nusra Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, fighting with the opposition, as terrorist organizations. This internal conflict, fueled by foreign weapons supplied to the opposition, is one of the bloodiest in the world. Mercenaries from Arab countries fighting there, and hundreds of militants from Western countries and even Russia, are an issue of our deep concern. Might they not return to our countries with experience acquired in Syria? After all, after fighting in Libya, extremists moved on to Mali. This threatens us all. From the outset, Russia has advocated peaceful dialogue enabling Syrians to develop a compromise plan for their own future. We are not protecting the Syrian government, but international law. We need to use the United Nations Security Council and believe that preserving law and order in today's complex and turbulent world is one of the few ways to keep international relations from sliding into chaos. The law is still the law, and we must follow it whether we like it or not. Under current international law, force is permitted only in self-defense or by the decision of the Security Council. Anything else is unacceptable under the United Nations Charter and would constitute an act of aggression. No one doubts that poison gas was used in Syria. But there is every reason to believe it was used not by the Syrian Army, but by opposition forces, to provoke intervention by their powerful foreign patrons, who would be siding with the fundamentalists. Reports that militants are preparing another attack — this time against Israel — cannot be ignored. It is alarming that military intervention in internal conflicts in foreign countries has become commonplace for the United States. Is it in America's long-term interest? I doubt it. Millions around the world increasingly see America not as a model of democracy but as relying solely on brute force, cobbling coalitions together under the slogan "you're either with us or against us." But force has proved ineffective and pointless. Afghanistan is reeling, and no one can say what will happen after international forces withdraw. Libya is divided into tribes and clans. In Iraq the civil war continues, with dozens killed each day. In the United States, many draw an analogy between Iraq and Syria, and ask why their government would want to repeat recent mistakes. No matter how targeted the strikes or how sophisticated the weapons, civilian casualties are inevitable, including the elderly and children, whom the strikes are meant to protect. The world reacts by asking: if you cannot count on international law, then you must find other ways to ensure your security. Thus a growing number of countries seek to acquire weapons of mass destruction. This is logical: if you have the bomb, no one will touch you. We are left with talk of the need to strengthen nonproliferation, when in reality this is being eroded. We must stop using the language of force and return to the path of civilized diplomatic and political settlement. A new opportunity to avoid military action has emerged in the past few days. The United States, Russia and all members of the international community must take advantage of the Syrian government's willingness to place its chemical arsenal under international control for subsequent destruction. Judging by the statements of President Obama, the United States sees this as an alternative to military action. I welcome the president's interest in continuing the dialogue with Russia on Syria. We must work together to keep this hope alive, as we agreed to at the Group of 8 meeting in Lough Erne in Northern Ireland in June, and steer the discussion back toward negotiations. If we can avoid force against Syria, this will improve the atmosphere in international affairs and strengthen mutual trust. It will be our shared success and open the door to cooperation on other critical issues. My working and personal relationship with President Obama is marked by growing trust. I appreciate this. I carefully studied his address to the nation on Tuesday. And I would rather disagree with a case he made on American exceptionalism, stating that the United States' policy is "what makes America different. It's what makes us exceptional." It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation. There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too.
